WHY WE SPENT TWO YEARS ON THE CONTAINER, NOT JUST WHAT'S INSIDE
Most toothpaste tubes end up in landfill within seconds of the last squeeze. We spent two years finding a better answer.
That's not a marketing line. It's where Akla began. Before the formulation was finalised, before the glass mouthwash bottle was sourced, before anything else, we were asking a question most oral care brands never ask: what should this thing be made of? A luxury aluminum toothpaste tube wasn't the starting point, it was the conclusion, reached slowly and on purpose.
THE PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC TOOTHPASTE PACKAGING
Standard toothpaste tubes are made from multi-layer laminate. A bonded combination of plastic and aluminum so tightly fused that recycling facilities can't separate them. In the United States alone, more than a billion tubes are discarded every year. Nearly all of them go to landfill, where they take around four hundred years to break down.
It's a strange situation for an industry built around health. The product inside is designed to protect your body. The container is designed for the shelf and then, almost immediately, for the bin.
We knew early on that Akla couldn't launch in a laminate tube. Not because it would have been hard to justify — the laminate is the industry standard, and most people never think to question it. But because the logic felt wrong. If every product we make is used twice a day for the foreseeable future, the container deserves the same consideration as the formula.
WHY ALUMINUM AND WHAT IT ACTUALLY MEANS
Aluminum is one of the most recycled materials on earth. Infinitely recyclable without any degradation in quality, it can be melted down and remade into new products indefinitely. When you finish an aluminum tube and recycle it correctly, it is likely back in circulation as a new aluminum object within sixty days. No toxic residue. No loss of integrity. The same material, in a new form, for as long as it's needed.
But we chose aluminum for reasons beyond its recyclability. Aluminum has presence. It has a weight in your hand that communicates something about what's inside, that this is not a product designed to disappear. The silver metallic printing is not decoration for its own sake. It's a signal that every surface of this object was considered.
THE SAME PHILOSOPHY APPLIES TO WHAT'S INSIDE
Once you start asking what a material should be made of and why, you can't stop asking it. The aluminum tube decision opened a way of thinking about the formula that we carried through every ingredient choice.
Pearl powder is a good example. It's the secondary polishing agent in Akla's toothpaste, not because it's unusual or marketable, but because it polishes gently and comes from a material with centuries of documented use across skincare and wellness traditions. It doesn't strip. It doesn't abrade harshly. It does its work quietly, the way a considered ingredient should.
The cornerstone of the formula is 5% concentration of NanoXIM CarePowder™ (non-nano) hydroxyapatite, a mineral structurally identical to natural tooth enamel and combined with pearl powder for a fluoride-free toothpaste that remineralises, polishes, and protects without defaulting to ingredients that have been standard for decades simply because no one looked for better ones.
The aluminum tube and the hydroxyapatite formula share the same origin story both are answers to what happens when you refuse to accept the default.

Multi-layer laminates almost never can. Look for FSC certification on any paper components, and for brands that are transparent about their full supply chain. Materials sourced responsibly tend to be used responsibly.

Yes. Aluminum is one of the most recycled materials in the world and can be processed by standard household recycling streams, unlike multi-layer laminate tubes which bond plastic and aluminum together in a way that most recycling facilities cannot separate. To recycle an aluminum toothpaste tube, remove the cap, squeeze out any remaining product, and place it in your aluminum or mixed metals bin.
Why don't more toothpaste brands use aluminum packaging?
Cost and production speed are the main reasons. Multi-layer laminate is cheaper to manufacture at scale and easier to print on directly. Aluminum tube production requires different tooling and a different supply chain. For brands optimising for margin and volume, laminate is the path of least resistance. For brands optimising for longevity and material integrity, it isn't.
